4. ‘Girls Be Ambitious!’

‘Be the person who you want to be, don’t be the person who they you to become’

Helen,

1. Why did you choose Japan and Today?

My high school in New Zealand is kind of like 東大の海外進学校. Every year we have 11-15 students get accepted by 東大.

I remember when I was in high school, my school principal recommended me to apply for 東大 along with other western universities. At the time, I was only 16 years old. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get accepted by my dream school so I thought going to Todai might be better a choice (even though at the time, I have never been to Japan and have never studied Japanese)…

so when I was 17, I entered UTOKYO

2. What’s the most impressive moment for you?

My impression for dining hall food has been really really really bad. Before coming to Todai, i believed that the dining hall food is the worst in the world…but when I realized that there are so many varieties and they are so cheap here(comparing what I had in New Zealand), I was quite relieved …
I guess the idea of having Japanese food at affordable price made me feel so happy LOL.

Another 瞬間 is whenever I eat out with friends.
Tokyo is undoubtedly one of the best cities for foodies: there are so many good restaurants and bars.
four years were not enough for me to explore…!

3. What’s your dream in the future?

I am going to graduate from todai this September. From this august, I am going to Grad school at Yale to study Econ (international and development economics).

My short term plan is to focus on environmental Econ and also learn about how to improve the sustainability practices and CSR projects in the private sector.

From there, I am thinking of entering consulting companies that are related/have provided green consulting services.

In the long run, I want to become an entrepreneur because I do not want to work for others for my entire life and be consumed by the hierarchy in companies. In a way, I want to leave a legacy–

It doesn’t have to be big but at least something that can help me change my surrounding environment.

I know this is very cliche, but I want to change the world and contribute to the society.
I want to give back because I am so fortunate to receive education and get to live in different countries.

4. Message ‘Girls Be Ambitious!’

‘Be the person who you want to be, don’t be the person who they tell you to become’

Thank you very much, Helen! and Good luck on everything!!
