A cheetah that runs across a large field of African savanna, a sifaka that hops across the ground of Madagascar, a polar bear that live in the harsh environment of the Arctic….

These are the sceneries that never stop fascinating me.
I have always wanted to see these animals in real life, and be of help for them

My dream since childhood

I grew up in the suburbs of Tokyo, and nature was not really a big part in my daily life.

However, I have always been attracted to the landscapes of vast wilderness around the world and various creatures living there.
At the same time, I gradually got to know there are many animals that have experienced a sharp decrease in its population or that are already extinct due to the overhunting of humans or habitat destruction.

I remember that I began to have a dream to be engaged in wildlife conservation when I was a junior high school student.
I believe my love for animals that I had since I was a child naturally led to a passion to do something for them.

I thought it was necessary to study biology to work with animals, so I decided to choose a science course when I was in high school. And at some point later , I came across a study field called ecology . It hit me that if I learned this, it will be very helpful in wildlife conservation.

Ecology is the study of how living things interact with one another and with their physical environment. For wildlife conservation, it is first essential to know what they eat, how they live, how they interact with other plants and animals, and what kind of habitats they need.
I felt almost by intuition that ecology is a study field that provide answers to these questions .

Therefore at UTokyo, I decided to major in ecology at the department of field science in the faculty of agriculture.

Pursuing the dream is not easy, but that’s what I want to achieve

To be honest , I don’t think there are many people who want to work in wildlife conservation at least in Japan.

I did not have any friend who had particular interest in wildlife conservation in high school, and also after entering UTokyo, where people with different backgrounds and ideas gather, I haven’t met almost anyone who hope to be involved in this field.

I don’t think it is easy to make this dream come true.
Its career path is not very clear and it is not straightforward like you should take this qualification and get that job. In the first place, there are not many occupations out there that can engage in wildlife conservation.

So I am very anxious, and sometimes I lose confidence and wonder if I can really realize this dream.

But somehow, I just can’t give up on this dream.

I want to do something and be helpful for the animals and the places they live that keep fascinating me.
This passion has always been with me and keeps moving me forward.

There are many ways to lead your life.
Some people pursue something they really love, others work hard for their precious ones, or just follow their intuition and try different things.
Every way of life is wonderful as long as you can enjoy yourself and feel happy.

In my case, I want to make my life helpful for someone else.

If I can find some value in my life, that is to make contribution to someone.
I have been able to learn a lot in a wonderful environment, encountering many awesome people.
That is why I want to pay it back in some way and I feel I have the responsibility to do so.

And I think what I can be most passionate about is to save animals that are confronted with severe conditions.
It will be really amazing if their situation will become better even for just a bit by my existence in this world.

It may not be very easy, but I’m ready to keep on challenging myself.
